IPL Format or Fixture

Firstly, there is a league match which every team needs to play. We also know this as Round Robin Round. In this stage, every team needs to play twice a match with every other team. So, at the end of the IPL, the 4 teams that have maximum points can qualify for the Playoffs. Now let’s look at some details on how playoffs are decided in the IPL.

Playoff Deciding Factor

So, as we already know that the 4 teams who score maximum points in the points table will qualify for the playoff. But there are some special cases and rules according to that. Let’s discuss this in little detail down below:

  • The team with the most wins in the matches in the league in the season will be placed at the higher position in the points table.
  • If there are teams that have equal points and equal wins, then the team with the high net run rate will be placed at the top of another one.
  • If teams are still equal, then the one with the higher number of wickets taken in the season will be placed high than the other one in the points table.
  • If still equal, then the position will be decided by picking lots by the authorities.

Now, this is only the format of Round Robin Round. Let’s discuss the IPL Playoff format.

IPL Playoff Format

There are 2 qualifiers and 1 eliminator plays between the teams which are qualify from the previous stage. So, let’s discuss it in brief down below:

Qualifier-1

In this, the top 2 teams from the points table will face each other. Also, the winner of the match qualifies for the final and the loser goes for the Qualifier-2. And waits for the result of the eliminator match.

Eliminator

In this, the 3rd and 4th teams in the points table face each other. So, the winner of the match goes for the qualifier-2 and faces the loser of the qualifier-1 team. Also, the loser team of this match will be eliminated from the IPL.

Qualifier-2

In this, the loser of qualifier-1 and winner of eliminator face each other. Afterward, the winner of this round goes to the Finals to play the match with the winner of qualifier-1. Also, the loser of the match will be eliminated from the IPL.

Finals

This is the last stage of the IPL season. In this, the winner of qualifier-1 and the winner of qualifier-2 will face each other. Also, the team that loses here will be eliminated. Hence, the team that wins this battle will be declared as the winner of the IPL season.

Although there is some special condition which can occur during the playoffs. So, for such cases, the committee has some rules under their selves. We also discuss these rules down below:

  • If any of the Eliminator, Qualifier-1, or Qualifier-2 matches are tied. Then the winner will be decided by the super over.
  • But if the conditions do not allow a Super Over or subsequent Super Overs. Then the team that finished higher in the League table will be declared as the winner of the playoff.

IPL Auction 2021

The auction process is done in the month of January and every team needs to buy players for the team. They have to make the highest bidding for a player which they want to purchase. Also, there is a base price fixed for a player and teams have to start the bid from the base price. Although, there are certain rules for the auction i.e.

  • Every team can retain a total of 3 players from their previous team.
  • However, the cost for retaining  3 players is 33 crores
  • In other words, if a team retains only 2 players then 21 crores of amount will be charged.

Now let’s talk about power in the auction for all the teams i.e. Right to Match card. According to this card if some other team brought another team previous season player. And that team wants to retain that player then they can use the Right to Match card. Let’s take an example for more understanding.

So, if team-1 has a player in the previous season of IPL. And they release him from the team before the auction. Then the player is available for the auction and any team can bid and purchase him. So, now let’s suppose team-2 purchase team-1 player. After that team-1 change their mind and wants to retain that sold player. In that case, team-1 can use the Right To Match card.

Meanwhile, if a team retain only 2 players then they have 3 Right To Match card. Also, if they retain 3 players then they have 2 Right To Match cards. Which they can use later in the auction. So, now let’s discuss the top picks from each team.
